Snake Game Strategy: Stop Chasing the Food

Classic Snake rewards patience more than speed. Most games end the same way: the snake heads straight for the food, gets long, and traps itself.

Early game: anything works

When the snake is short, take direct routes. You have space to recover from mistakes.

Mid game: follow the walls

Once the snake is about a quarter of the board, start moving along the edges and approach food from the outside in. This keeps the open area in one big piece instead of several small pockets.

Late game: the zigzag

Experienced players sweep the board in rows, like a lawnmower, leaving one column free to return. It's slow, but it's nearly impossible to trap yourself, because your tail is always moving out of the path ahead.

Three habits that help

  1. Before turning, look at where your tail will be when you arrive, not where it is now.
  2. Never enter a gap narrower than two cells unless it leads to open space.
  3. Ignore food that requires a risky turn; it will still be there.
